Gaymers Camden Crawl 2011 Line Up Finalised

Posted April 22, 2011

Camden Crawl

The final line up for 2011’s Gaymers Camden Crawl has been announced, including some exciting late additions such as appearances by top grime MC Tinchy Stryder and former Blur guitarist Graham Coxon.

The festival, which is now in its sixteenth year, takes place over the May Bank Holiday weekend (30th April-1st May) in 39 bars and venues in the Camden area of North London, including The Forum, Koko, Barfly and ‘Camden Bars’ venues The Camden Head, Enterprise, Monarch and Abbey Tavern.

Highlights include performances by established acts such as The Lemonheads, British Sea Power, Killing Joke, Razorlight, Guillemots, Saint Etienne, The View, and Simian Mobile Disco.

In addition to this year’s extraordinary live music line up, the festival continues to develop the breadth of its daytime fringe arts festival. Featuring a vast array of comedic talent, visual art and crafts exhibitions, spoken word and performance theatre, interactive events & games and, of course, live music, the daytime carnival of entertainment sprawls across an additional thirty Camden Town venues for the weekend from 12 – 6pm both dates.

Immediately following the festival’s fringe programme of cutting edge arts during the daylight hours, the streets of Camden will literally come alive with music. Straddling more than twenty venues, the Crawl evening schedule features over 200 of the best up & coming artists from the UK and abroad alongside seminal greats and very special guests. The evening line up kicks off from 5:30 pm and runs until the wee hours on both days of the weekend.

Upon arrival at the festival each ticket holder is presented with an all-access wristband, programme guide, timetable and free download album to help plot his/her day’s adventure. ‘Crawlers’ are then granted unlimited access to all official daytime and evening venues and parties capacity permitting. As is tradition, the full venue schedules will remain secret until the event and surprise guests may appear at any time and at any venue.

Taking place at THE MONARCH this year is live music all day. Our hosts are Kangol, PRS, and Canadian Blast and will include sets from Gallops, Bear Driver, The Good Natured, Russian Futurists, Bright Light Bright Light, The Lines, Jonquil, Bleech, Turbogeist, The Mountains And The Trees, Eagulls, Random Impulse, Young Empires and We Are Animal. Seeing us through to the early hours are The Monarch’s own club nights Soundtracks and Kings And Queens.

Buffalo Trace presents Buffalo Rocks

Posted September 7, 2010

James-Walsh-300x260

Makers of tasty bourbon Buffalo Trace are putting on a new night of music at The Monarch. On Thursday 23rd September there is a very special launch party

James Walsh headlines the show with a special stripped down acoustic set and a different vibe from his usual full band set up with Starsailor.

Support acts come in the form of the amazing Jim Stapley and Lee MacDougall.

For a band often lambasted as shrinking violets, Starsailor have kept some pretty loose and unexpected company since they announced their arrival in 2001 with the majestic ‘Love Is Here.’ Then, as 19 year olds straight out of music college in Wigan, they found themselves hurled into the world of Heavenly Recordings – a label notorious for The Social, the good times and being friends with Primal Scream, Happy Mondays and The Charlatans. It was the legendary DJ Andrew Weatherall that provided their first remix. The band might have been signed by EMI, but it was Heavenly’s founder, the mercurial Jeff Barrett, that A+R’ed them through their first two wildly successful albums. Indeed, the second of those – 2004’s ‘Silence Is Easy’ – saw them become the last band to record with production genius and careless gun user Phil Spector. Not the kind of company you suspect that their supposed peers – Snow Patrol, Keane et al – would ever keep.

Europe drop by Metalworks

Posted July 27, 2010

Two members of Europe made a surprise visit to The Monarch last Sunday, joining metal covers band Metalworks to play The Final Countdown. John Norum and John Leven were cornered by member Amit Sharma as they headed over from their slot at the Roundhouse iTunes festival. He told Metal Hammer magazine how he “took a break to cool off outside and saw the two John’s walking across the road”. Despite being a bit wary at first they were won over by the band’s impressive sound.

““John Norum came up and did The Final Countdown and then both Johns got up for ‘Black Night’ by Deep Purple. After playing, they hung around outside and were true gents – taking some time to have their pictures taken and meet some fans.” he added.
